Guides & Expert Advice

Grout Joint Width and Tile Thickness

Key information about grout joint width and tile thickness when using modern tile leveling systems.

What grout joint width should you choose?

The correct grout joint width affects both the appearance and the long-term performance of a tiled surface. The ideal joint width depends on the tile format, installation area and project requirements.

Grout joints provide the necessary space to compensate for minor tile size variations as well as movement caused by temperature changes, substrate expansion and structural stress. If joints are too narrow, tiles can become subjected to pressure, increasing the risk of chipping or edge damage. Excessively wide joints, on the other hand, may negatively affect the overall appearance, especially when installing large-format tiles.

Using the correct threaded tile leveling clip ensures a precise and consistent grout joint width throughout the installation. This is particularly important when working with rectified tiles, where the sharp, accurately cut edges leave very little room for error. In these applications, even fractions of a millimetre can have a significant impact on the final visual result.

Grout Joint Width Comparison

Choosing the correct grout joint width affects both the appearance and the long-term performance of a tiled surface.

1 mm

Appearance:
Very narrow, modern grout lines

Tolerance Compensation:
Limited – requires a high level of installation accuracy

Recommended Use:
Rectified wall tiles, designer surfaces and premium interior installations

Recommendation:
Ideal for ultra-narrow grout joints and a clean, elegant appearance

1.8 mm

Appearance:
Balanced grout lines

Tolerance Compensation:
Excellent balance between installation accuracy and tolerance compensation

Recommended Use:
Rectified tiles, floor tiles and large-format tile installations

Recommendation:
The standard choice preferred by many professional tile installers

3 mm

Appearance:
Bold grout lines

Tolerance Compensation:
High – greater tolerance for tile size variations and substrate irregularities

Recommended Use:
Rustic tiles, outdoor installations and specialty applications

Recommendation:
Ideal for wider grout joints and higher installation tolerances

Which Tile Thicknesses Are Recommended?

A high-quality tile leveling system is suitable for a wide range of tile thicknesses, from thin wall tiles to large-format floor tiles.

Depending on the cap version used, the Leveling Swiss system accommodates tile thicknesses from approximately 3 mm to 15 mm, making it suitable for almost all common indoor and outdoor applications.

3 – 8 mm

Suitable for:
Thin wall tiles and porcelain tiles

Typical application:
Bathrooms, kitchens and wall surfaces

Advantage:
Precise installation of thin tiles

8 – 12 mm

Suitable for:
Standard floor tiles

Typical application:
Living areas and standard floors

Advantage:
Universal application

12 – 15 mm

Suitable for:
Large-format and heavy-duty tiles

Typical application:
Large tiles and high-traffic areas

Advantage:
Excellent stability and load distribution

Common Mistakes When Using a Tile Leveling System

Insufficient Tile Adhesive

Full adhesive coverage is especially important when installing large-format tiles. Voids beneath the tile can create stress points that may lead to cracks, hollow spots or tile failure over time.

Uneven Placement of Tile Leveling Clips

Using too few leveling clips can reduce the effectiveness of the system. Even with a tile leveling system in place, tiles may shift, tilt or settle unevenly during installation.

Overtightening the Reusable Caps

Applying excessive tightening force can create unnecessary stress within the tile installation. The purpose of the leveling system is to align adjacent tiles, not to force them under pressure.

Removing the Clips Too Early

The break-off point should only be removed once the tile adhesive has fully cured. Premature removal may cause slight tile movement and affect the final surface level.

Incorrect Removal Direction

Tile leveling clips should always be kicked or struck in the direction of the grout joint. This ensures a clean break at the designated break-off point and prevents unnecessary damage to the installation.

And that's it.

Follow these simple guidelines and you'll achieve perfectly level tiles and clean, consistent grout lines – from small home renovations to demanding commercial tiling projects.
